The Sounds of the Letter Yy

Today, we reviewed the three different sounds of the letter Yy. Then, we sorted the words on the board. You can see us do it in the video below. 

Did you know that the letter y is a consonant and a vowel? When it is at the beginning of a word, it is a consonant like in yogurt, yo-yo and yes. When it is at the end of a word by itself, it is a vowel and can make two sounds:

-Long E like in happy, mommy and rainy (in long words)

-Long I like in my, fly and cry (in short words)

The Letter Yy - My Family

Today we reviewed that when the letter Yy


-is at the beginning of a word, it is a consonant and it makes the same sound as in yogurt, yellow and yes.

-is at the end of a word, it is a vowel and it can make the Long E sound like in happy, January and sunny.

Long /e/ with -y spelling

Today, we learned that the Long /e/ sound can also be written with -y like in happy, rainy, and baby. Then, we copied the vocabulary in our Phonics Dictionary. Let´s Review!
