Long /e/ Word Sort

Today, we reviewed the spellings of the Long /e/ sound that we have learned about so far:

-e like in zero, me and even

-ee like in bee, green and sheep

-ea like in eat, seal and tea

-y like in happy, sunny and candy

-ie like cookie, mommies and candies

-e_e like in Pete, these and here

Long /e/: -y and -ie spellings and plurals of words that end in -y

Today, we have reviewed the Long /e/ Sound with the -y spelling and learned about the -ie spelling:

-y like in happy, sunny and family

-ie like in families, candies and babies

Do you know that singular words that end in -y and make the Long /e/ sound transform the letter -y to -ies to make the plural?

one mommy, two mommies

one family, many families

one cherry, many cherries

The Letter Yy - My Family

Today we reviewed that when the letter Yy


-is at the beginning of a word, it is a consonant and it makes the same sound as in yogurt, yellow and yes.

-is at the end of a word, it is a vowel and it can make the Long E sound like in happy, January and sunny.

Did you know the letter y is a consonant and a vowel

When it is at the beginning of a word, it is a consonant like in yogurt, yo-yo and yes. 

When it is at the end of a word on its own, it is a vowel and make two sounds:

-Long E like in happy, mommy and rainy

-Long I like in my, fly and cry

Long /e/ with -e spelling and using pronouns

Today, we learned that the letter -e can make two sounds:

- the short /e/ sound like in ten, hen and pet

- the long /e/ sound like in zero, hero, and she

Do you know that he, shewe and me are pronouns? We practiced making lots of sentences with these special words:

-He is a boy.

-She is a girl.

-Give me the marker. 

-We are in class.

-She is sitting.

-We are working.

-He is eating.
